Entry Level Engineering Cover Letter Types

This post provides two entry level engineering cover letter examples. One example is for a standard cover letter. When I say standard cover letter, I am talking about an actual, one-page cover letter document.

When most people refer to a cover letter, they are talking about a standard cover letter. You will use a standard cover letter in the following situations:

  • Handing out your resume in person (paper cover letter).

  • Online applications where they ask for your cover letter to be uploaded (.pdf cover letter if allowed, otherwise .doc).

However, like a standard resume, the standard cover letter is dying. While you still need to prepare one for the times it is needed, most companies are moving toward online job applications that do not require one.

Most online job applications have completely removed your ability to upload a cover letter document with your job application. Instead, they provide a text box to “write” in your cover letter. Companies do this so your cover letter can be recorded and reviewed by the automated application software the company uses.

When asked to type in a cover letter, you should not just copy your standard cover letter into the text box. Online application cover letters are shorter than standard cover letters. The basic rules for online application cover letters are:

  1. These cover letters should be between 100-150 words.

  2. No paragraph should be over 3 sentences.

  3. Text should clearly state the job you are applying for, as well as why and what you can offer the company.

Both types of entry level engineering cover letter examples are included next. In the examples, the engineer is a mechanical engineer. However, these cover letter examples are not engineering discipline specific. The same examples would work for a civil engineering entry level cover letter, electrical engineering entry level cover letter, or an industrial engineering entry level cover letter.

XYZ Company’s emphasis in the automotive industry matches my passion and previous work experience. Entry Level Engineering Cover Letter Tips

Just like your resume, you should try to make your cover letter as good as it can be. When a recruiter is choosing between 200 applications, it is the small things that can make all the difference.

To make your cover letter better, here are some cover letter tips to help take it to the next level.

  1. Use the entry level engineering cover letter examples as templates to write your own cover letters.

  2. Try to customize each cover letter so it is relevant to the position you are applying for.

  3. For your standard engineering cover letter, try not to use generic terms like “Dear Sir” or “Dear Madam.” It is much better to address the cover letter to a specific person and put the company’s name and information in the letter.

  4. Create both types of entry level engineering cover letters. You always want a standard cover letter ready when needed. You also don’t want to try to write an online application cover letter on the spot, because it will not turn out well.

  5. Re-read your cover letter before submitting it. There is not a single entry level engineering position where I have not received a cover letter addressed to the wrong person or one that has the wrong company name somewhere in the letter. This is an automatic rejection for that person’s application.

  6. Just like your resume, your cover letter should be professionally reviewed. A professional reviewer will catch mistakes that you will miss.
